TOOLS & SUPPLIES

WHAT DRAWING SUPPLIES DO YOU USE?

FOUNTAIN PENS:

I mainly use fountain pens. My favorite affordable FP is the Pilot Prera. You can use cartridges to easily refill the ink. It is on the shorter side, but with the cap posted on the back it has a normal gripping length. Without the cap posted, I like that it fits in my palm when drawing with an overhand grip. I use the medium nib, which draws a little finer than most medium nibs. So I sometimes use it alongside other medium nib pens for line width variation.

My other main FPs are the Kaweco Student and Pelikan Classic M200 (both a little pricier), and a vintage Esterbrook Desk Set pen.

FOUNTAIN PEN INKS:

I typically use Platinum Carbon Black ink or De Atramentis Document Black ink, as both are considered waterproof and archival. Keep in mind that waterproof inks may dry up/clog the pen. I use my pens frequently and have not had many issues with clogging, but I have stained the barrel of a white pen by using waterproof inks. If you experience clogging, flush your pen/parts with water, or for stubborn clogs try using a fountain pen flush like this. If you are not concerned with permanence of the ink, or like to use a range of colors, you might consider using non-waterproof inks.

FINELINERS:

Other than fountain pens, I use fineliner pens like Faber Castell Pitt Artist Pens. These are great for finer, less expressive details. I use these often in my mini-cityscapes like Easy Hour and Cinemajestic.

MARKERS:

I try to use markers that use pigmented, archival inks. Many dye-based and alcohol markers may be more prone to fading over time, whereas pigmented inks are considered more lightfast and permanent. Some of the markers I enjoy using are Royal Talens Pantone Markers, Faber Castell Albrecht Dürer Watercolor Markers, and Faber Castell Pitt Artist Dual Markers.

WHITE PEN:

The one in most of my process video is the Uni-ball Signo UM-153 White Gel Pen. It is pigmented, acid-free, water-resistant, and fade-resistant. Links to purchase: JetPensBlickAmazon

BRUSH PEN:

The black brush pens I use are the Pentel Fude Brush Pen and the Pentel Pocket Brush Pen.

PAPER:

I use Borden & Riley #234 Paris Paper for Pens. This is a very smooth paper intended for pens and markers. If I’m using wet media, I will typically use a basic watercolor pad like Strathmore or Canson. For urban sketching, I use the Etchr Hot Press Watercolor Sketchbook. If you prefer a rougher, toothier texture, you might prefer the cold press version.

SHOP

WHEN WILL MY PRINT SHIP?

If you ordered a limited edition or pre-order print, it will take some time before the print ships, as I will go through a process of scanning, color correcting, and ordering physical proofs of the print before shipping starts. The listing will give you the projected “Starts Shipping” time, which is when the first-ordered prints will ship, and phases of shipping will occur following that date. For example, if an edition of 100 starts shipping in Mid-November, that means the first 15-30 prints ordered will go out the third week of November. If your order was placed later (eg. your edition number is 75-100), it may not ship until December, as it will be among the final phases of shipping.

If your order was not a pre-order or limited edition, your print should ship within 2 weeks. These ship directly from a print shop and they are occassionally backed up with projects, so your patience is appreciated!

If you need a print for an occassion by a particular time, please reach out to me directly. If I have the print on hand, I may be able to get it to you sooner.

DO YOU SIGN YOUR PRINTS?

All limited edition prints are hand-signed and numbered, and shipped directly from my studio. Non-limited-edition prints ship directly from the print shop and are not hand-signed— In most cases a signature is printed within the artwork. Some prints may be currently limited in stock quantity, and therefore list as “limited,” but are not “limited edition.”

VIDEO PROCESS

HOW DO YOU RECORD YOUR VIDEOS?

I use an iPhone 15 Pro with a SquidGrip Desktop Tripod. I’ve had to reorder this tripod a few times because eventually one of the legs breaks. I also use the Canvas Overhead Lamp for lighting. I don’t usually clamp my phone to this because it shakes a bit when I’m working.

LIMITED EDITIONS

WHAT IS A LIMITED-EDITION PRINT?

Limited Edition Prints are hand-signed and numbered, with a limited run of a specified number of prints. These prints as offered will be considered out-of-print after their initial run.

WILL IT EVER BE RE-RELEASED?

Following the initial run, I may offer Artist Proof editions as a secondary signed & numbered limited edition run (these may have slight differences in color or composition from the original edition, and may have minor mark-ups or notes done by hand in the proofing process). Artist Proof editions are typically a smaller edition run.

Occasionally, a limited edition print may be re-released after several months to a year as a second-edition run (with “2nd Ed.” indicated by the edition number). There is no guarantee that a limited edition print will ever be re-released.

Certain limited edition prints may be re-released at a different size or style as Patreon-Exclusive non-limited-edition prints. For example, a 14x17” limited edition may later be available to paid-tier Patreon Supporters as an 8x10” print, or with variations other than print size. These releases will be available in the Supporter Store, which is accessible once you’ve signed up as a paid-tier supporter on Patreon.
